Our Team
The Micro Insurance Academy is a project of Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini (SUB) Charitable Trust.
The lead trustee of SUB is Shri Dharmendra Kumar, joined in this endeavor by Shri Sanjeev Kumar Bhanot and Dr. K. C. Mishra.
With a lifelong experience in the insurance industry in India, Shri Dharmendra Kumar is leading SUB with expertise, focus and vast knowledge of the benefits that insurance can bring to the poor. A convinced and committed disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a keen observer and commentator of the development of insurance activities in the Indian Subcontinent, Shri Dharmendra Kumar has now shifted his attention from the study of the history of the insurance industry to involvement in the nascent microinsurance activity at the bottom of the pyramid in rural areas and amongst the urban poor.
The Trustees of SUB are aided in their mission by the founding Chairman of the Micro Insurance Academy, Prof. Dr. David M. Dror. Prof. Dror is an internationally recognized authority in micro health insurance, whose reputation was gained through the conceptual framework he developed on ways to link grass-roots poor communities with reinsurance (a concept he called “Social Re“) and the seminal volume Social Re Insurance: A New Approach to Sustainable Community Health Financing (with A. Preker; published by World Bank and ILO). David is the Founding Chairman of the MIA and has extensive field experience in working with grassroots groups in low-income countries. He holds a DBA (Magna cum Laude) and a PhD (Summa cum Laude). He is honorary professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam/MC (Netherlands) and publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals (accessible here).
Meet the rest of the MIA Team:
Amar joined the MIA as administrative assistant from October 2008 and is in charge of the general day-to-day maintainance of the Delhi office.
Ashok is part of the Operations Team at MIA. Ashok has been with the MIA from inception, and is a key pillar of the smooth running of the organization on a daily basis. His tasks include logistics and procurement for the MIA.
Atanu is a post-graduate in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata) with over 20 years’ experience in commercial and development sector (particularly in the area of health). His experience in the health sector ranges from HIV/AIDS to RCH, from improving health care delivery system to microplanning. In MIA he works as a Researcher with the primary responsibility of providing technical support to various research initiatives and developing management information system for micro health insurance projects. Previously he has worked for GOPA-EPOS (in the Basic Health Project, Govt. of West Bengal), UNICEF (as a Consultant) and renowned NGOs like Child In Need Institute and Bhoruka Public Welfare Trust.
Brian joins the MIA as a Training Specialist. He holds a degree in economics and political science from The University of Dublin, Trinity College, and a masters in project management from University College Dublin, where he spent part of his studies at Beijing UIBE. His experience includes working as an intern on economic affairs at the Embassy of Ireland, Washington D.C., business development in a technology company and a project management role in a startup company. He also has volunteer experience with an Irish education-focused NGO in Dublin, and with sustainable farming projects in Patagonia, Argentina.
Conor joins the MIA as Researcher and is currently working on a European Union- funded program using new research designs to look at the efficiency and responsiveness of community health insurance schemes in a number of Indian states. Conor is an economist by training, holding a degree in economics and politics, and a masters in economics. Upon completing academic work, he spent several years working in economic research and policy making for the government of Sierra Leone. As a researcher, he handled a variety of projects including social impact analyses of various policies, the development costing models for healthcare and education services, and statistical modelling and forecasting of macroeconomic variables.
Dr. Ajay Sharma brings to the MIA his 4 years of rich work experience in the domains of Medicine and Health Insurance. Coming from the Corporate background, Ajay is a healthcare specialist by training, holding a degree in Medicine and Masters in health administration from TATA Institute of social sciences, Mumbai. Experience of working with the various NGOs, the Support groups, the State Health department and the Corporate gives him a holistic understanding of the involvement of various stakeholders in healthcare delivery at all levels. During his two years stint at ICICI Prudential Life Ins. Co. Ltd, Ajay was part of the operations team and was responsible for managing important portfolios such as health claims adjudication and provider network management.
In his current role at the MIA, Ajay is responsible for the development of various concepts for the community based health insurance schemes such as provider contracting and payment mechanisms. He is also working on innovative health delivery models for the existing CBHI schemes.
Dr. B. Dinesh Baliga graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1985. He has a vast clinical experience in surgical branches esp. accident & emergencies, Orthopaedics in various hospitals in Delhi and has also published a number of articles on Lithotripsy. He has worked for the Ministry of Health in Libya. On his return from Libya in 1998, he completed his post-graduate degree in Hospital and Health Management and since then he has been working in the field of Public Health. He has also worked in the World Health Organisation as a Surveillance Officer in the National Polio Surveillance Project till 2002. He later joined a British Charity Organisation and Skillshare International as a Public Health Specialist (Health Trainer/Developm-ent Worker) and carried out field work in remote tribal areas of Kalahandi and Koraput Districts (Orissa, India) with the aim to serve the poor and develop strategies forsustainable development amongst people below poverty line. He has set up Community Health Programmes in many remote areas of Orissa, Uttaranchal, Jharkahand and Maharashtra. He has also worked with people living with HIV and has helped setting up a Network of Positive people in Koraput, Orissa. He has also produced training modules, IEC materials on health specific to each location. He joined the MIA as a Medical Advisor.
Iddo brings with him over a decade of experience in various sectors working in four continents. He joined the MIA after an assignment as a management education specialist with the University of Geneva (Switzerland), where he led the creation of an innovative international MBA programme. Dr. Dror has experience consulting large international organizations as well as grassroots NGOs on microinsurance, international trade, and management issues, and is a frequent speaker in India and abroad on microinsurance and development issues. In his current assignment at the MIA, Iddo is responsible for the strategic development and expansion of the MIA as well as overseeing its operational units (finance, HR, resource mobilization and general administration). He holds a PhD in Economic and Social Sciences from the University of Geneva, where he also earned a Masters of Business Administration. .
Dr Shikha holds PhD degree in Medical Geography and a post graduation in Geography and PG diploma in Geo-informatics for Disaster Management and Environmental Assessment from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun. She has 10 years of extensive experience in application of GIS/ Remote Sensing techniques in the field of public health management. Prior to MIA she worked as a GIS analyst at Urban Health Resource Centre (New Delhi) where she was responsible for giving technical assistance to GoI on GIS related issues. She worked as a part time faculty at National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (New Delhi) and as a researcher at National Institute of Health Statistics (ICMR). She had about 3 years stint at EPOS health consultant as a Programme Coordinator. Dr Shikha has also done short term consultancies on urban health issues with Family Health International.
Dr Shikha joined MIA as a Researcher (Spatial Analysis) and leads the spatial research activities (using innovative techniques of GIS and Remote Sensing) for the FP7-EC funded project.
Francesco joined the MIA in July 2009 after a fruitful experience at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London, UK. He has previously worked as Intern, academic contributor and political analyst for the Embassy of Italy in India, the India International Centre in New Delhi and the current-affairs magazine Esquerra Nacional (Barcelona, Spain). Francesco holds a M.Sc in International Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) and his dissertation on South Asian regional cooperation was published as Special Article by EPW, Mumbai. He has completed his undergraduate studies in International Sciences and Diplomacy (summa cum laude) across Italy and Portugal.
At the MIA, Francesco takes care of fundraising, external relations and communication.
Jacquiline brings to the MIA her previous experience in the general insurance & reinsurance business where she has worked since 2001 as an actuarial analyst. She applied this knowledge and experience in her research work at the MIA, which centers on reinsurance for micro insurance units. Jacquiline holds an M.Phil degree in Economics from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
Jamal has about 7 years of experience in International organizations like Care India and ORBIS International in various Capacities. He has rich experience of project development & management, long term strategic planning, implementing effective review and monitoring measures, partner management and capacity building. During his tenure with Care India and ORBIS international he has been part of projects on Child Nutrition and health, Gender & sexuality, HIV/AIDS Behaviour change communication, Disaster management and Childhood Blindness prevention. Jamal is a Post graduate in Social Work (MSW) from Dept of Social work, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.
In his current assignment at MIA, Jamal is working as Project manager. He is responsible for coordinating and managing microinsurance project, monitoring project activities and providing technical and managerial support to project staff.
Juho has previously worked as Programme Officer at Human Rights Law Network, New Delhi, where he conducted research on the right to food campaign. He has also conducted internships in Europe in the field of human rights. At the MIA, Juho's task is to document the implementation process of various projects. He holds a BA in Communication Studies and Comparative Religion from Middlesex University, London, a MA in Religion and Human Rights from Roehampton University, London, and a Diploma in Humanities from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.
Manasi is a Graduate of Delhi University and holds Book Illustration and Multimedia diplomas from Shankar's Academy of Art and Book Publishing, Sharda Ukil School of Arts, and Arena, Aptech Ltd. She has over 5 years of experience in the development sector, notably through her work as an Artist with the American Red Cross, where she designed and prepared visually and culturally appropriate materials for children and adult survivors of crisis or disaster. In her current role, Manasi is responsible for MIA’s graphics related work, such as the production of illustrations to explain the value proposition of insurance to people challenged by literacy and innumeracy skills.
Maria Nisha Peris is the Deputy Director of Operations for the MIA. She joined the MIA after completing a Masters of Public Policy from the University of Maryland. Nisha has experience working with the University of Maryland in the United States and with the World Bank, Child Relief and You, Ford Foundation and the International Development Research Centre in India.
In her current assignment, Nisha is responsible for strengthening the organization's internal processes, she works with the advisory services unit and provides oversight on all aspects of MIA India's office operations and project management. She is a member of the senior management team.
After completing her graduation in Sociology from Delhi University and Masters in Social Work from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, she pursued a one year Diploma in Animation from Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan. With previous experience of the NGO sector, Paankhuri joined the MIA as a Flash Animator.
Dr. Pradeep Panda is a population economist by training and has been associated with academic research for the last two decades. He has held positions at the University of Bombay, Mumbai and Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum where he engaged in teaching and research. He has also contributed to applied research at the National Council for Applied Economic Research and the Population Council, New Delhi, and at the Institute for Rural Research and Development, Gurgaon, where he was Director of Rural Research. He has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and has undertaken empirical research on gender dimensions of poverty, employment, violence, health and human rights. In his role as a Senior Researcher at the MIA, Dr. Panda leads a team of researchers for the EU-funded project on the impact assessment of community based health insurance schemes in India.
Priya is a post-graduate from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and has earned a Master degree in Business Administration from IGNOU. She has extensive experience in rural development both in India & abroad. She has about 10 years of experience in Programme Management, Monitoring & Evaluation, Documentation, and Training & Capacity Building. She joined MIA as a Training Specialist. Her responsibility includes training module development, delivery of training programmes, reviewing the training programmes and coordinating with partner NGOs.
Priyadarshini joins MIA as a training specialist with more than 6 years of experience in wide range of research, advocacy and campaign activities in the areas of partciapatory governance, livelihood and health. Previous association with Organisations like Center for Youth and Social Development (CYSD) in Orissa and Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) in New Delhi has strengthen her undersatnding on varied development issues realting to the life and livelihood of the Rural and tribals community in India. She has an MA and Mphil degree in Anthropology with specialisation in Biological Anthropology from Utkal University, Orissa. As a training specialist her job responsibilities in MIA includes, contribution to ongoing development of training material on micro insurance, contribution to workshops and training session, giving training to the targets groups and evaluating the training programmes.
Raj Kamal comes with experience of working in public sector banking followed by a decade of work in the microfinance sector. In the microfinance sector, he has worked with NGOs and microfinance institutions to strengthen their microfinance programs and with Sa-Dhan, the industry association to develop performance standards for microfinance institutions and in initiating sectoral reports, the 'Side by Side' and 'Quick Report' on progress and trends among microfinance institutions. He was a member of the committee set up by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to devise accounting standards for microfinance institutions. He has conducted several training programs for NGOs and microfinance institutions on issues of governance, performance monitoring and reporting. Raj Kamal coordinates development of training processes in Micro Insurance Academy, works on standard setting and advisory services to MIA's clients.
Ralf joined the MIA from the Department for Cooperative Studies of University of Cologne (Germany), where he coordinated a European Union funded project on micro health insurance in India. Ralf has conducted extensive research on microinsurance and also consults in the same domain. In his role of Director of Research and Training, Ralf coordinates the research and training activities of the Micro Insurance Academy aiming to assist in the development of community based micro insurance schemes, which are integrated into the financial system. Ralf is economist by education holding a degree from University of Cologne.
Ranjan holds a bachelor's degree in commerce and has undergone an Advanced Diploma in Web Designing and E-Commerce Technology & RHCE Training. He has more than five years experience in the Information Technology / Systems management field in various national and international NGOs. At MIA, he is providing his knowledge and expertise in IT infrastructure, web solutions and IT management.
Richa joined the MIA after assignments as a Programme Assistant in the Woman and Child Development Unit of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, New Delhi, and as a Gender Trainer at the Centre for Social Research, New Delhi. At the MIA, Richa is working on a GTZ commissioned research project on Collective Action entitled: "Using community dynamics in pro-poor insurance: affiliating communities en bloc". Richa is a Post Graduate in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics, and a qualified MSW from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
Rosy has joined MIA from the Voluntary Action Network of India (VANI). She is convent educated and has completed a secretarial course with YMCA. Rosy has 13 years of experience working with NGOs like VANI and NCEPDP where she handled the front office and administrative work. She joins the MIA as the Executive Secretary to Director of Operations.
Sachin joins MIA as a Researcher bringing his experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods. His research work with various national and international organizations was focused on HIV/AIDS and stigma, mental health service delivery, quality of care in public hospitals, evaluation of programs and policies, integration of health and mental health, ethical issues and values in mental health sector, and building a people’s movement for mental health. He recently finished course work for his Masters of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management from Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service, New York University, U.S.A. Sachin has a Masters degree in Organizational Psychology from Pune University.
Sumitra joined the MIA after over 6 years of work in remote tribal areas of Odisha (India) where she worked in the field of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Eye care, RCH, Gender, Adolescence issues & water-sanitation with a number of international agencies - LEPRA, Spanish Red Cross and UNFPA. She has experience in implementing and managing projects the field of public health. She has studied Gender & Social Work at postgraduate level and holds a BA in Law from Utkal University and a Diploma in Rural Development from IGNOU. She focuses on issues of public health, community mobilization, capacity building and IEC/BCC design.
Sumitra joined MIA as a Project Manager and she is currently working on the implementing of microinsurance schemes in Odisha.
